The SIMATIC S7-1200 CPU can add up to three communication modules. RS485 and RS232 communication modules provide connections for point-to-point serial communication. The extended instruction or library function, USS driver protocol, Modbus RTU master station, and slave station protocols are used in the configuration and programming of the communication, which is all included in the Simatic Step 7 Basic engineering configuration system.

There are three different models of CPUs for the SIMATIC S7-1200 system: CPU 1211C, CPU 1212C, and CPU1214C. Each can be extended to suit the needs of your machine. A signal board can be added to the front of any CPU to extend digital or analog I/O without changing the size of the controller. The signal module can be connected to the right side of the CPU to further expand its digital or analog I/O capacity. CPU 1212C can connect two signal modules, while CPU 1214C can connect eight signal modules. All SIMATIC S7-1200 CPUs can be equipped with up to three communication modules (connected to the left side of the controller) for point-to-point serial communication.

All SIMATIC S7-1200 hardware has built-in clamps that can be conveniently mounted on a standard 35 mm rail.
